What is Yomi Name in Dynamics 365 (and what’s its benefit)?

When looking at the Dynamics 365 out-of-the-box features you may have looked at the Yomi Name feature and wondered ‘What is a Yomi Name?’. It’s actually a useful feature that you should be utilizing to allow you to enhance and maintain your vital sales relationships.

Think of it this way:

You have a great product or service. You always deliver quality. Yet, you struggle to close your sales leads and you can’t understand why? One reason might be because you haven’t developed a personal relationship with potential clients.

The art of sales isn’t always about pushing the benefits of your product. In fact, Harvard Business School professor Gerald Zaltman found that very little logic goes into a consumer’s decision making. Rather, it’s emotion that plays the biggest role. A much bigger role – he found that 95% of a consumer’s decisions were governed by the heart, not the head.

In that vein, it is vital that you maintain good interpersonal relationships with your clients and with potential new clients. Something as simple as remembering a client’s birthday, or details about their personal life can make all the difference. Dynamics 365 can help you with that — as well as helping you avoid pitfalls that may sour a relationship.

One common challenge you may face is how to pronounce a client’s name. They may have a name that’s not common to your native language, or spell a common name in a way that you aren’t familiar with.

The Yomi Name function in Microsoft Dynamics 365 can help you.

But, how do I use Yomi Name?

Although most out-of-the-box fields are in designed to reduce the need for creating multiple fields that collect similar information — and Yomi Name seems similar to First and Last Name — the Yomi Name function is used to compliment that basic information.

Simply put, it allows users to indicate the phonetic annunciation–how the name sounds when spoken–of the name in the description of the field.

As highlighted above, it can be useful when listing names that are foreign to the user’s dialect, but can also be used for contacts who have unique or complex names, or names that may be pronounced differently depending on the preference of the client (e.g. Tara = Tar-ah), or that are pronounced differently than the spelling (e.g. Duane = De-Wayne).

Here’s how it will look on your screen:

  • First Name: Cem
  • Yomi First Name: Gem

The Yomi Name field is just one way that Dynamics 365 helps you maintain that personal touch with your clients and allows you to speak to the emotional aspect that represents 95% of a consumer’s decision making.
